Clinical Comparative Study between Osteoarthritis and Avascular Necrosis managed with Uncemented Total Hip Arthoplasty

Abstract
Authors performed a retrospective matched- pair study which includes 27 hips with osteoarthritis and same number of hips with avascular necrosis managed with uncemented total hip arthroplasties to identify whether it is true that clinical and
radiographic results after uncemented total hip arthroplasty in avascular necrosis were inferior to those in osteoarthritis as other authors had reported previously. The results were as followings.
1. Clinical results of osteoarthritis group were slightly better than those of avascular necrosis group in terms of final functional score and incidence of thigh pain.
2. With regard to chronologic changes in hip function, the hip function of osteoarthritis group was recovered slightly faster until 3 months after operation and maintained with slightly better hip scores compared to those of avascular necrosis
group.
3. Mean interval between operation and weight bearing without support in osteoarthritis group, 6.7weeks were shorter compared to those in avascular necrosis group, 10.5weeks which was significantly different statistically.
4. Overall incidence of radiolucency about acetabular and femoral component and other radilological findings in osteoarthritis group were similar compare to those of avascular necrosis group.
In conclusion, clinical results were better in osteoarthritis group, but radiographic results were similar in both group as a short term outcome in relatively young patients. Long term follow up should be necessary to know whether such results
can
maintain even for longer period of follow up.
